Contrary to popular opinion, true detoxing is not just about drinking apple cider vinegar and starving yourself or drinking celebrity endorsed teas. It’s about adding whole, fresh foods into your diet to help your body detoxify naturally every day.

Your kidneys, liver and skin neutralize and eliminate toxins from your body on their own every day, however in order to keep your immune system strong and make it resistant to disease it’s important to give your organs a nudge as often as you can by eating foods that detoxify the body naturally.

THE 3 BEST DETOX FOODS

Hydrating foods – Think cucumbers + celery

Our bodies are made up of mostly water so naturally it would make sense that drinking water and eating foods with a high water content helps to prevent you from becoming dehydrated. It also helps you detoxify your body.

Cucumbers are about 95% water which makes this veggie (although it’s technically a fruit) the perfect choice to help flush toxins out of your body while delivering powerful nutrients like B vitamins, vitamin K, vitamin C, potassium.

It’s also no coincidence that cucumbers are abundant in spas because they also contain multiple B vitamins that will help to manage stress and anxiety.

Something as simple as hydration can help assist with weight loss and helps to increase detoxification by flushing out toxins through your kidneys and returning essential minerals back into your blood. It also helps with increased energy and healthy poops! This makes cucumbers my go to as one of the best detox foods.

Add them to your water, salad or smoothie, yup your smoothie.

There is some research that shows that drinking two glasses of water before a meal can lead to increased weight loss! I cover lots of ways to increase your water intake through my Metabolism on Fire weight loss program, you can check it out by clicking here.

Beets
There was a time where I wouldn’t even look at beets and they completely turned me off. When I learned to prepare them the right way and understood the crazy amount of nutrients they provided I was hooked!

When you’re detoxing they will help by making sure that the toxins actually make it out of your body. This is what makes them one of the best detox foods. Beets also help with free radicals, making them an anti-cancer ally. They can remove damaged cells before they become cancerous.

Beets are also amazing for increasing your energy. If your energy needs a boost check out this all natural energy drink.

I think you’Il absolutely love my Sweet n’ Sexy Pink Quinoa Salad recipe which is an easy way to add those detoxifying beets into your diet. You can grab the recipe here.

Sea vegetables
Sea vegetables are perfect for cleaning our bodies and reducing the waistline which makes them one of the best detox foods for weight loss and cleansing your body.. You’re probably most familiar with nori which is used to wrap sushi. Other types include wakame, arame and dulse. They also contain a special carbohydrate that can remove heavy metals from your body.

Made up of one third protein and one third dietary fiber, seaweed helps to balance blood sugar and help you to feel satisfied. It also contains iodine which controls how fast you burn calories. Seaweed also has high levels of iron and B vitamins that improve energy and mood.

You can find them in the Asian section of your supermarket or health food store.

Add them to soups, stews, salads and sandwiches.

OTHER NOTABLE MENTIONS

Raspberries

Raspberries are an outstanding source of nutrients, antioxidants and phytochemicals. What makes them one of the best detox foods for weight loss and cleansing is their fiber content. 1 cup has 32% of your daily value of fiber!

Fiber is important for keeping…ahem…regular. What happens or doesn’t happen with your bowels determines the health of your body – your immune system, brain and every other bodily system.

If your intestines are strong and functioning well it will help to keep your immune system strong and help your body to defend against toxins. If you’re not having regular poops, your body is trying to get your attention and let you know you ‘aint doing something right. To keep ‘regular’ it’s important to eat high fiber foods and foods that have a high water content like raspberries.

The best way to get a large dose is to toss them in your morning smoothie or toss them in your water for extra flavour. Raspberries are also an excellent source of vitamin C which helps to keep your immune system strong.

Dark, leafy greens

There’s so much that I can say about this dream team. Really, this group easily could’ve been at the top of the list of the best detox foods. Dark, leafy greens like spinach, kale, swiss chard and bok choy contain chlorophyll that help the body detox and alkalize. The chlorophyll in greens helps your body to make healthy and clean blood. Your liver is the main organ that helps to filter the blood so this is where chlorophyll comes in.

Greens are also full of essential nutrients like vitamins A and C.

You’ll want to find a way to work these babies into your diet every day because the enzymes that are found in leafy greens assist with digestion which allows your body to focus more on detoxification rather than digestion.

To take full advantage of the cleansing properties of leafy greens, it’s best to enjoy them raw. Try to work a bit into every meal. Add them salads, smoothies or sautee them in a little bit of olive oil, garlic and ginger.
